Like a lot of things in life there are good writers and bad writers. And there is good writing and bad writing.
Good writers get published. Bad writers get rejection slips.
But does this matter a jot to you? The answer is “it depends…”
These days we communicate more than at any time in history and in a multitude of new ways. We write emails more than letters and we use ‘text’ speak to send messages via our mobile phones. We sell our business propositions on web sites and we rant about what bothers us on our blog sites. We are drowning in a sea of communications that the internet has made available to us and, like it or not, we are all living and participating in the ‘Age of Information’.
So who cares if we write well or not? Surely it’s what we are saying that is important – not the way we say it?
Sadly, if you think this way then you are one of the thousands of on-line ‘average’ communicators that is still missing the point!
It is exactly because thousands of poor writers are adding content to the net everyday that good writers are the only ones standing out from the crowd. The fact is that good writing still equates with ‘professionalism’ and poor writing equates with ‘all the others’. So when people read your website text, articles and blogs how are they going to classify you?
Let’s spell it out…
A good writer is someone that is able to demonstrate a number of skills, in particular using the right choice of words to engage with the reader and meet the writing objective. A good writer understands the importance of good grammar as well as the mechanics of structure, style, content and punctuation.
A good writer will check his facts and sort them into a logical order before starting to write. He will know how important it is to carefully structure a piece of writing so that it has a clear and concise introduction, a flow of relevant content and a satisfying conclusion. A good writer knows how to adapt his style for his target readership whether it is an academic paper, an opinion piece, a literary article or a specialist magazine. Most of all he must use the power of the written word to inform, engage entertain or instruct as appropriate.
Get it right and your audience will think ‘This guy knows his stuff…’. Get it wrong and your audience will think ‘This guy’s just like everyone else…’
The bottom line is this. Today Social Media is revolutionising the way we work – and the way we communicate is fundamental to our success in business as well as in life. Today, like never before, ‘Content is King’ and the quality of your communication personifies you as an individual.
If you are a brilliant writer already then congratulations! You don’t need any help from me.
But if you are not sure that your web presence is all it should be then get in touch and let’s work together to make your business shine!
